No Farrier Will Trim Your Donkey? Here's Why I Teach Owners to Do It Themselves

Aug 09, 2026

The Farrier They Call When Everyone Else Has Said No

If you've ever loved a donkey and had no idea where to turn, you already know the feeling.

The farrier won't take them. Or they will, but only sedated. Only with ropes and restraints and enough force to get it over with. Or they show up once, decide your donkey is too much, and never come back.

You're left holding a whole lot of love for your animal and the crushing weight of feeling helpless.

I built my entire career around that moment.

Hi, I'm Megan Hensley. The Donkey Farrier.

I've been a working farrier since 2006. I graduated from Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School in 2007, took over my mentor's business, and started building a career doing this work the traditional way.

Then donkeys changed everything.

I became the farrier people called after every other farrier had already said no. Word travels fast when you're the one who says yes.

By 2017 I was driving the entire state of California for donkeys the industry had written off. And my inbox was full. Messages from California, from across the country, from around the world. Donkeys suffering. Owners with nothing. No information, no support, no guidance.

I knew I couldn't get to all of them.

So in 2020 I did something the industry hated

I decided to teach owners how to trim their own donkeys' hooves. Online.

I was called irresponsible. I kept going, because donkeys and their owners needed me.

Teaching owners to do their own donkey hoof trims has become the most important work I do. My mission is to improve donkey welfare around the world by putting the right information in the right hands. Yours.

Nearly 1,000 students have come through some version of my program, and I have hundreds of 5 star reviews behind that.

What I actually do

I help donkey owners that farriers have said no to learn to trim their own donkey's hooves safely and correctly. That makes farriers optional and turns resistant donkeys into calm, cooperative partners.

Even if you've been told you need sedation. Even if you've been told you need restraints. Even if you've been told your donkey is impossible to work with.

Many of my students complete their first trim in six weeks.

Where to start

Here's the question I ask everybody who finds me: what's your biggest struggle right now with your donkey's hoof care? Is it finding a farrier who will work with them, or is it not knowing where to even start?

Either way, the answer is the same. You need the information, and you need somebody who knows donkeys walking you through it.

That's what DIY Donkey Hoof Trimming is. It's my online membership where I teach you the whole thing start to finish, and where you land in a community of donkey owners doing exactly what you're about to do. You can look around before you commit. There's a 7 day free trial, so you can see how I teach and decide if it's a fit before you spend anything.
